Bourton-on-the-Water, UK (31st October, 2024) – Summit Medical Ltd, a global leader in Orthopaedic solutions, is proud to announce the first successful cases in the U.S. using TORS (Torsional Orthopaedic Revision System), Dual Mode Ultrasound for Revision of Cemented Endoprosthesis.
This marks the official introduction of TORS to the U.S. market and a commitment to expanding its availability across the United States. Summit Medical is planning a nationwide rollout to ensure that Orthopaedic Surgeons in all states have access to the latest ultrasonic technology for PMMA bone cement removal that can aid complex Revision Arthroplasty procedures.
Summit Medical’s Commercial Director in the U.S., Judy Fenton, commented:
“We are thrilled to introduce TORS in the U.S. market and witness its immediate success. It has been a remarkable journey, and we are proud to see that access to TORS in the U.S. is already making such a positive impact. This system addresses a critical need in complex revision procedures, offering Surgeons access to the latest ultrasonic technology for PMMA bone cement removal.”
Nikki Palfrey, Chief Commercial Officer at Summit Medical, added:
“None of this would have been possible without the dedication and collaboration of our teams, the Surgeons who have been instrumental in its early success, and our partners across the healthcare field. We are incredibly grateful to everyone involved in making this technology available to enhance patient outcomes in the U.S.”
Dr. Edward J. McPherson, MD, FACS, Professor of Complex Revision Arthroplasty – Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, was the first to perform revision cases using TORS. He spoke about his initial experience:
“Ultrasonic Technology is a valuable tool for implant removal in revision joint surgery. With the planned retirement of 2nd generation systems, I have explored across 3 continents to find an effective 3rd generation system for the future of revision surgeries. My search eventually led me to the United Kingdom, where I had the good fortune to meet Steve Young, the developer of TORS (Torsional Orthopaedic Revision System). For the past year, I have worked with Steve to test this system in laboratory settings. This technology offers significant improvements and refinements in ultrasonic wave monitoring, allowing for greater reach into areas of the medullary canal to remove stubbornly retained cement. I am grateful to the team at TORS for their full commitment to improved efficacy of care in the field of revision joint surgery and I eagerly await their continued advancements in tip technology with future designs.”
Dr. Steve Young, Managing Director at Radley Scientific Ltd and the Inventor of the TORS technology, shared his perspective:
“I am deeply proud to witness the launch of TORS in the U.S. and look forward to seeing the positive impact it will have on patient care. This achievement is the result of countless hours of hard work and passion, and I am grateful to Summit Medical for their partnership, believing in this vision and helping to bring it to life.”
Summit Medical’s priority is to ensure that TORS is available to Surgeons across the country, providing them with the tools they need to deliver better outcomes for their patients as well as supporting more healthcare professionals as they adopt this ultrasonic technology.
